Riviera Shopping Centre in Gdynia came alive with a unique Christmas installation inspired by the city’s modernist heritage. Designed by Multidekor as a bespoke festive concept, the decorations were created to complement the architecture of the centre while combining geometry, light and interactive elements.
The result was more than a seasonal display. It became an engaging festive destination — a place where design meets play, where families spend more time together, and where the Christmas atmosphere becomes part of the customer experience.
This year’s Christmas decorations at Riviera Shopping Centre were inspired by the elegance of modernist forms. Clean lines, geometric patterns and a sophisticated play of colour created a coherent visual language that reflected the architectural identity of Gdynia.
At the heart of the gallery, a majestic Christmas tree became a natural focal point, bringing light, warmth and festive energy into the space. The entire concept was designed not only to decorate the centre, but to strengthen its character and create an experience visitors would remember.
The interactive Christmas zone at Riviera Shopping Centre showed how festive design can become a powerful engagement tool for retail destinations.
A fairytale Christmas carousel attracted attention and invited families to play together, while Santa’s House gave children a magical place to experience the joy of the season. A stylish swing blended naturally into the modernist character of the space, while games such as noughts and crosses and Snake added moments of fun, competition and nostalgia.
Visitors could also explore a sensory zone with senso-boxes and an illuminated tunnel, where light, colour and movement created an immersive experience for children and families. A relaxation area completed the concept, offering a place to pause, enjoy the atmosphere and spend more time in the centre.
How an Interactive Christmas Zone Increases Dwell Time
Christmas decorations have traditionally played an aesthetic role: they create atmosphere, enhance the festive mood and encourage visitors to enter the space. The project for Riviera Shopping Centre in Gdynia went one step further.
Every element of the interactive zone was designed to keep visitors engaged for longer — naturally, without making the centre feel as though it was asking for their time.
This is where the real value begins.
When an interactive zone is placed near cafés, restaurants or key retail routes, it creates a natural rhythm for family visits. Children play in the zone, one parent watches them from a nearby café, while the other visits the shops — or the roles reverse. The shopping centre becomes a place where families can spend time together, not just a place to complete a shopping list and leave.
Each attraction adds a few extra minutes. Together, the location, the variety of activities and the emotional involvement create a system that encourages families to stay significantly longer than planned.
For a shopping centre, this means more café visits, more impulse purchases and, most importantly, a positive memory that encourages families to return the following weekend.
The Mechanics of Longer Visits
The zone was composed of several types of attractions, each appealing to a different visitor segment and encouraging people to stay for a different reason.
The manually powered carousel was not simply an attraction for children — it was an attraction for families. A child sits, a parent pushes, and both become part of the experience. This physical involvement creates a shared memory and builds an emotional connection with the place.
The noughts and crosses game works in a similar way, adding an element of friendly competition between parent and child. One round leads to a rematch. A rematch leads to another. Soon, another family joins the interaction.
Snake was a deliberate nod to parents. The first game on the first mobile phone — anyone who had a Nokia remembers it. This moment of nostalgia creates a smile and keeps adults engaged for longer than any instruction panel could.
The tunnel, swing and sensory boards were designed with children in mind. But when placed well, they do more than simply entertain young visitors. They give parents a moment of freedom, comfort and control — which directly supports a longer and more relaxed visit.
The entire illumination concept for Riviera Shopping Centre was designed with sustainability and energy efficiency in mind. Modern eco-LED light points were used throughout the installation, consuming significantly less energy than traditional lighting solutions.
This allowed the festive atmosphere to shine throughout the season while supporting a more responsible approach to design, energy use and long-term operation.
For shopping centres, this balance is increasingly important: visitors expect memorable experiences, while owners and managers need solutions that are efficient, durable and aligned with sustainability goals.
A Christmas Experience Visitors Remember
The Christmas illuminations at Riviera Shopping Centre show how a creative approach to festive decoration can do much more than beautify a retail space.
A well-designed Christmas concept can strengthen the identity of a destination, increase visitor engagement, support longer dwell time and create emotional moments that encourage people to return.
At Riviera, modern design met the warmth of Christmas. Modernism met tradition. And the shopping centre became more than a place to shop — it became a festive destination for families, children and the local community.
